Earlier this week the St. Louis Blues surprised the hockey world by giving offer sheets to Oilers players Phillip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.

Now we know that the move came after the team reportedly made a trade offer to the Oilers for the very same players. According to sources, the Blues had offered Pavel Buchnevich as the return for the young forward and defenseman. These trade talks date back to the trade deadline last season, so the team should not have been caught completely off guard by this move.
Now the Oilers stand to lose both youngsters for nothing as they cannot currently afford to match the offer sheets. The Blues signed Broberg to a two-year deal that carries a cap hit of 4.58 million dollars a season and Holloway to a similar, two-year contract with a 2.2 million dollar AAV. Should both go through, the team would owe Edmonton their 2nd and 3rd round draft picks in the 2025 NHL draft.
"The offer to Broberg is for a two-year contract at $4,580,917 per year, the maximum offer that would require a second-round draft pick as compensation. The offer to Holloway is for a two-year contract at $2,290,457 per year, the maximum offer that would require a third-round draft pick as compensation."
Notably, Broberg did request a trade from the Oilers in the middle of last season. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman thinks this could have been a factor in how this situation unfolded.
Many Oilers fans have pointed out how the team completely messed this situation up. Had they managed their assets better, Broberg would have been traded by now, and they likely would have received more than just a 2nd round pick in return. As such, they have made their bed, now they need to lay in it.
Will this move work out in the end for the Oilers? Perhaps, but we will have to see how Broberg and Holloway do in St. Louis before we can pass any real judgement.
