John Tavares recently stepped down as Maple Leafs captain, but that doesn't mean his time with Toronto is coming to an end anytime soon.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made some huge calls in the past week, including the move to name Auston Matthews as the 26th captain in franchise history, just days after John Tavares announced his plan to step aside.
On the surface, it would be fair to assume this was the end of John Tavares in Toronto with his free agency set for next summer, but that may now not be the case, with TSN reporter Chris Johnston revealing that talks are going to start soon for an extension with the home town Tavares.
"Those conversations are probably going to get started at some point."
While the team are yet to win anything under Tavares, it appears as though he's been a fantastic leader and an individual player, topping 60 points in every full season since arriving from New York back in 2018. It's unclear yet what the extension would look like, or whether or not the team want to get it done before the end of next season, but from all accounts, the organization are happy with his output, and if he wants to stay, they're willing to accommodate that.
