This week while everyone was enjoying the calm of Summer, the St. Louis Blues sent shockwaves through the hockey world by extending offer sheets to two Edmonton Oilers young talents and restricted free agents, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.

New GM Stan Bowman has until Tuesday to decide whether to match those offers or let the players go. Oil Country could've avoided this dilemma by signing them earlier but their GM vacancy courtesy of Ken Holland's retirement didn't help matters. Jeff Jackson stepped in temporarily but said he wanted to mostly leave things up to the new man in charge which is now Bowman.
The offer Broberg accepted from the Blues is a two-year deal worth $9.16 million, which would cost St. Louis a second-round pick as compensation. The Blues were interested in both of these players at the deadline but Edmonton wanted to hang onto them, en route to their roles in the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Broberg was solid but knew he couldn't ask for much as he hit the open market. However, it's safe to say he got the bag and didn't expect it.
Holloway's deal is two years at $4.58 million, requiring a third-round pick. But here's the interesting part: word on Sportsnet, is that the Oilers, who have the right of first refusal are likely to match the offer sheet for Holloway.
This would make sense as Dylan is a forward and the Oilers already have a trustworthy blueline, meaning losing Broberg won't hurt.
However, you can never have too much depth and he is a defenseman with great potential. It's why you shouldn't be surprised if the Oilers move the injured Evander Kane to LTIR, thus taking his cap hit off the books for the start of the season and keeping both Broberg and Holloway. Regardless, Tuesday should be interesting.
