An insider states the Vancouver Canucks have decided to let a two-time Stanley Cup champion go to free agency without making an offer for the 2024-25 season

While the 2024 Stanley Cup Final has yet to get underway, teams not participating are in full offseason mode, making decisions that will impact their club's future. It seems Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has already made a big decision on one of his pending free agents.
According to Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal, 35-year-old defenceman Ian Cole, who won Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, won't be getting an offer from Allvin.
"Looks like Cole is going to hit the free agent market on July 1st. He signed that one-year deal last year with the Canucks at $3 million. Now, the Canucks would need Cole at a much lower number than three. It doesn't look like the Canucks will be able to re-sign him after some contract talks I believe over the weekend. In the last week, the two sides could not find common ground but it looks like they did talk. The Canucks really liked this player. They wanted him back, but it looks like he's going to hit the free agent market after some contract talks that couldn't find common ground."
Cole is a veteran of more than 800 regular season NHL games, along with another 129 in the playoffs. Experience like that doesn't come along everyday, but the price still needs to make sense for the Canucks to keep him. That said, losing Cole and possibly fellow defenecman Nikita Zadorov would leave a large hole on Vancouver's blueline that won't be easy to fill.
"Week 2: Thursday

ZADOROV MAYBE NOT MAYBE COMING BACK?! WHO KNOWS?!
Ian Cole fired into the sun

Still no trades or signings.... What happened to "this week before the finals is gonna be crazy" big nose seravalli?

Anyway maybe something tomorrow on.... friday..."
NHL free agency opens at noon ET on July 1.
